Graduating This Summer? Then What?

April 2006 With summer approaching, many graduating students have one thing on their minds: beginning their careers. If you're about to graduate and are still looking for an opportunity, don't panic: There are a number of steps you can take to jumpstart the process.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Start now. The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to learn about various opportunities, refine your resume, conduct informational interviews, network and participate in campus recruiting events. This is also a good time to look for an internship or work in a temporary capacity to gain some "real world" experience. If you're unsure of where to begin, consult with your professors or campus career center.

  • Build your network. Get the word out – to your friends, family, neighbors, former bosses, peers, etc – that you're looking for a position. You never know who has a job lead to share. Reach out to your faculty members for their insights; they usually have a pulse on companies that may be hiring. Also, tap into your peer group including those who will graduate with you and those who graduated just ahead of you, and ask if they know of any openings. Don't forget to speak with members of your student associations and organizations and contact alumni volunteers through your career center.

  • Vary your approach. You will increase the odds of finding the right position if you employ a mix of strategies such as networking, attending career fairs and conducting periodic Internet searches. Working with a staffing service is another valuable option. These firms typically have access to jobs that are not posted online or listed in classified advertisements. They may also have temporary employment opportunities, which can help you build new skills and create a bridge to full-time employment.

ACCOUNTEMPS is a specialized temporary staffing service for accounting, finance and bookkeeping professionals. Accountemps provides support throughout an accounting department.
