Everyone is eligible and encouraged to take the CBM Exam. However, to qualify for the CBM designation, you must meet the following requirements:

Certification Requirements

  • Achieve “Pass” score on all three parts of the CBM Exam.
  • Have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university or international equivalent.
  • If you have a specialty certification and/or graduate degree, then at least three years career track professional work experience. Otherwise, four years of career track professional work experience.

NOTE: All requirements must be fulfilled before certification designation is granted. Internships, vacation/holiday employment, seasonal work, administrative, clerical (or similar) or volunteer positions do not qualify in meeting experience requirements.

Recertification is required every three years to keep knowledge current and is offered through APBM’s continuing education program, requiring 20 CPEs (continuing professional education) hours per year. (Note: NASBA-approved courses qualify for CBM CPE.)

There is a $48 per year maintenance fee to cover administrative costs such as record keeping, the on-line quarterly newsletter, and certificate verification.

For maintenance fee purposes, we use the calendar year as the counting method for the maintenance fee as well as CPEs.
